Description

On the occasion of the Hispano-French Exhibition, held in Zaragoza 1908 to commemorate the centenary of the Sieges of the capital of Aragon by Napoleon's troops, Ángel Lizcano and Eliseo Meifrén painted two excellent works, View of the Stone Bridge in Zaragoza and View of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza. The first of these is a view from the mouth of the River Huerva, and the second was taken from the San Lázaro Barracks, the former Mercedarian convent. They are two views of the Ebro at dusk, in which the loose Impressionist-style brushstrokes are combined with the fashionable colour palette of the Art Nouveau style of the time. A woman washing clothes on the river bank, in one case, and a herder leading his cows to drink, in the other, add a human element to these urban landscapes of Zaragoza in the early 20th century.
